Triple West Medical have been appointed by a prestigious NHS Trust based in the East Midlands to help recruit a Consultant Neurologist for a substantive basis. They are seeking an experienced doctor with a specialist interest in Epilepsy.

The Trust is one of the largest employers in the area and are on an exciting journey. With over 15,000 staff, they provide a range of national and international specialists services and are at the forefront of new procedures and research programmes. The Trust is going through an exciting period with a major new capital build redevelopment programme.

The successful applicant will work within a team of Consultant Neurologists. As well as provision of General Neurology services in both inpatient and outpatient settings, the candidate will be expected to provide sub-specialty expertise to complement the delivery of a high quality, comprehensive Neurology service by the department. Subspecialty expertise in Epilepsy and motor neurone disease would be a major advantage.

The department has weekly epilepsy clinics including a complex epilepsy as well as VNS clinics. The team works closely with our neurophysiology colleagues as well as our neurosurgery colleagues to support our patients. The successful candidate will be expected to do a mix of general neurology clinic and subspecialty clinics. Booking criteria for general neurology clinics are per the ABN guidance with 30 minutes allocated for a new patient and 15 minutes for each follow up patient. It is expected 5 patients are booked into each general neurology clinic and the rest of the clinic can be follow up slots. Each Clinic session is usually 4 hours.

Clinical Duties

- A full range of Neurology emergency and elective patients are admitted to the NHS Trust and the appointee will be responsible for the management of those patients admitted under his/her care
- Provision with Consultant colleagues of a comprehensive elective and emergency Neurology service
- Provision of reciprocal cover for periods of leave
- Continuing responsibility for the care of patients in his/her charge and the proper functioning of the department
- General clinics are booked according the Association of British Neurologists Guidance, 30 minutes per new patient and 15 minutes per follow up. Specialist clinics are booked variably depending on specialty. These posts will not involve taking over general neurology patients so the clinics will initially be booked with new patients with follow-up slots converted over time. Long term patients are expected to see 5 new patients in each general clinic, plus follow up patients (between 4 and 6 depending on clinic length)
- Speciality clinics are generally booked with a lower new follow-up ratio, for example, 2:8 depending on subspecialty
- Consultants are expected to provide continuing responsibility for patients under their follow up care
- Multidisciplinary working is required and supervision of specialist nurses will also form the duties of consultants in some subspecialties
- These duties are subject to review from time to time in the light of the changing requirements of the service. If alterations to the described duties are required these will be mutually agreed between the appointee, his/her Consultant colleagues, and the Trust
- The person appointed will be required to devote substantially the whole of his/her time to the duties of the post and give them priority at all times
