We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Care of the Elderly on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful department.
Our client's Elderly Care Department currently has 10 full time substantive and 2 Locum consultants. They provide input to elderly care / Acute Frailty Unit / Orthogeriatrics and a range of outpatient as well as community based services. Each ward has a full medical staffing complement including one each of FY1, CMT / GPVTS and Specialist Registrar / middle grade. Discharge planning and support, is aided by an Integrated Discharge Team. There are links with the much larger community based nursing and therapy teams. Department has well established weekly educational seminar, monthly Morbidity and Mortality meeting and Clinical Governance meeting.
In addition there are 3 Stroke Consultants running a thrombolysis service and a dedicated Stroke Unit. The Elderly Care team currently provide a wide range of hospital and community based services including Acute Frailty, Stroke, Ortho-geriatric services as well as running specialist clinics for patients with Parkinson's disease, TIAs, falls and general medical conditions. Inpatient elderly care wards include three acute elderly care wards, a stroke unit and an established 22 bedded Acute Frailty Unit.
Joining an existing team of seven established full time Consultants, The successful appointee will be asked to fulfil various duties, such as: post holder will need to take responsibility for the management of patients admitted to their specialty Elderly Care ward (12-15 patients) routinely and those admitted under their care whilst on call for Acute Frailty. The latter would average 12-15 per on call. These patients are then streamed to Sapphire Acute Frailty Unit (SAFU) if early discharge planned (<48 hours) or one of the 3 Frailty Base wards for longer admissions. SAFU has a dedicated Elderly care Team with 2 Consultant Geriatricians supported by their own team of juniors and a Multidisciplinary Team. All subspecialist interests are welcome. There is an opportunity, in negotiation with the other consultants, for participation in the running of the established clinics such as Falls and Movement Disorder Clinic. The successful applicant will also have an outpatient workload comprising of new and follow referrals for managing complex co-morbidities. Typical clinic would have 3-4 new patients and a similar number of follow-up patients. In addition, the appointee will be asked to fulfil other duties such as post holder will be expected to participate in the training programmes for junior medical staff and clinical governance and audit duties.
