We have been assigned by one of the UK's more prestigious NHS Trusts to help them recruit a Consultant in Gastro on either a Substantive or an NHS Fixed Term basis for 12 months to join their successful Gastro department.

Our client has five hospitals providing a wide range of high quality services and opportunities for innovation. One of the sites has the full range of district general hospital services, as well as regional specialties, including the country's best performing trauma unit. Another of the sites, also provides district general hospital services, while one of the other sites is a specialist services hub which provides adult medical care, inpatient renal, urology and vascular services and robotic surgery.
The successful appointee will be joining a department that currently includes 4 consultants, 2 specialist registrars, 2 clinical fellows and 3 specialist nurses with responsibilities for inflammatory bowel disease, viral hepatitis and endoscopy, in fact a number of specialist gastroenterology services have been established at the Trust including ERCP, oesophageal physiology, capsule endoscopy and fibroscanning. The appointee will be asked to fulfil various duties, such as: be expected to contribute to the management of inpatient and outpatient Gastroenterology and preferably also contribute to the development of specialist services including pH monitoring /manometry, EUS, complex polypectomy whilst seeking to expand the ERCP service, be expected to participate in and present the results of audit. They also welcome candidates who may be interested in developing the upper GI service, appointee will provide appropriate care, diagnostic and therapeutic services for patients presenting with gastroenterological illnesses, will be a contribution towards the site-based GI bleed rota. General internal medicine contribution is optional, the post holder will perform two OPD clinics per week (seeing 5 new patients and 6 follow up patients) and two general endoscopy lists, plus a session dedicated to a specialist interest. Expertise in ERCP for one of the posts available would be welcomed and one session per week will be dedicated to this for the appropriate individual. The post holder may be expected to fulfil some of their clinical commitments on other sites in the Trust & The gastroenterology consultant teams (when covering the wards) on each acute site provide early morning and afternoon review of the Emergency Floor to identify patients needing specialist care and will perform daily board and ward rounds of patients on the specialist GI / hepatology ward supporting the delivery of SAFER. The teams are supported by complements of three specialist registrars, two SHOs and one FY1 doctor on each site.
